Alpen Cafe

We have a new place to eat in downtown Opelika and it's actually delicious...YAY!! Alpen Cafe serves authentic German & Bavarian Cuisine and it has a bakery with made from scratch desserts and baked goods.

We went today for lunch and I had the Jaeger Schnitzel with horseradish mashed potatoes and green bean salad. Everything was delicious! My mom had the special which was stuffed cabbage and she liked it a lot. Dale had Biermarinierten Huhn which is a German version of BBQ chicken that has been marinated in beer. He said that the flavor was good, but the portion was small so he will probably try something else next time. He also had a side of the German Potato Salad which I tasted and it was very good. There is a good variety of items on the menu including soups, salads, appetizers, main entrees, sandwiches and sausages (German hot dogs).

The prices are GREAT! My entrĂ©e with two sides AND a drink was only $7.95. Dinner entrees are a little more and don’t come with a drink, but they are still very reasonably priced.

I was sad that we didn’t get to try the desserts. The lady who bakes was sick and had been out for a couple of days so they were out of almost all the baked items.

The only complaint we had (and it didn’t bother me as much as it did Dale & my mom) is there is a musty/mildew smell in the back room where we sat. I don’t remember it being there when it was the Cajun restaurant. I guess that just comes with old buildings, but it was a little distracting.

Overall though it was a great lunch and we will definitely be going back soon!

Alpen Cafe is located at 913 South Railroad Ave in downtown Opelika. Hours are Tuesday - Thursday 11am until 8pm; Saturday & Sunday 11am until 9pm; Sunday Brunch 10am until 2pm.
